چکیده

The CN B 2 -X 2 + molecular emission spectrum is used to measure both the vibrational and rotational temperatures in atmospheric pressure arc jet discharges. The vibrational and rotational temperature effects on the synthetic diatomic molecular spectra were investigated from the v ,v = 0,0 band to the 5,5 band. The temperatures obtained from the synthetic spectra compared with the experimental result of a low-frequency arc discharge show a vibrational temperature of 4250–5010 K and a rotational temperature of 3760–3980 K for the input power in the range of 80–280 W. As the 0,0 band is isolated from other vibrational transition bands, determination of the rotational temperature is possible based only on the 0,0 band, which simplifies the temperature measurement. From the result, it was found that the CN molecular spectrum can be used as a thermometer for atmospheric pressure plasmas containing carbon and nitrogen. © 2009 American Institute of Physics. Hydrodynamic limit for an arc discharge at atmospheric pressure

In this paper we study a partially ionized plasma that corresponds to an arc discharge at atmospheric pressure. We derive an inviscid hydrodynamic/diffusion limit, characterized by two temperatures, from a system of Boltzmann type transport equations modelling that plasma problem. The original property of this system is that impact ionization is a leading order collisional process. As a consequ...

Ignition and temperature behavior of a single-wall carbon nanotube sample.

The electrical resistance of mats of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is measured as a function of mat temperature under various helium pressures, in vacuum and in atmospheric air. The objective of this paper is to study the thermal stability of SWNTs produced in a helium arc discharge in the experimental conditions close to natural conditions of SWNT growth in an arc, using a furnace inste...

A microfabricated atmospheric-pressure microplasma source operating in air

An atmospheric-pressure air microplasma is ignited and sustained in a 25μm wide discharge gap formed between two co-planar gold electrodes. These electrodes are the two ends of a microstrip transmission line that is microfabricated on an Al2O3 substrate in the shape of a split-ring resonator operating with a resonant frequency of 895 MHz. At resonance, the device creates a peak gap voltage of ∼...

The development of uniform atmospheric pressure glow discharges: appearance of stable glow discharge in air, argon, oxygen and nitrogen at atmospheric pressure using a 50 Hz source (S Okazaki et al 1993 J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 26 889)

The development of atmospheric pressure plasmas (APPs) for chemical synthesis, mat erials processing, environmental cleanup and now for biotechnology has been continually challenged by the desire, and the need, to produce uniform glow discharges. A scaling law in low temperature plasmas states that if ionization occurs only from the ground state, the gas density N is constant, and the E/N (ele...

Self-Organization of Atmospheric Pressure Carbon Arc Discharges

The atmospheric pressure carbon arc in inert gases is an important method for the production of nanomaterials [1]. Typical nanosynthesis arcs operate in a dc mode between a graphite anode, which is consumed, and a cathode which can be made from either graphite or a lower melting point material [2]. In spite of many studies, the basic physical processes in this discharge such as cathode electron...
